The Ruddy Shelduck is characterized by its vibrant plumage, featuring rusty orange feathers with contrasting black markings on its wings and tail. Its distinctive white wing patches stand out during flight. Both males and females share similar plumage, though males often have more pronounced markings and brighter colors.

These shelducks inhabit a variety of wetland habitats, including lakes, rivers, and marshes, where they forage for aquatic plants, seeds, insects, and small crustaceans. They are known for their loud, honking calls, which can be heard during flight or as they communicate with one another on the water’s surface.
